Hair Replacement
Hair replacement offers options...
There was a time when both men and women wore elaborate wigs over their natural hair. Since people already knew the wigs were artificial, they became as much a fashion statement as a means to cover any hair loss, especially for men. Today hair replacement is less about fashion and much more about restoring the emotional wellbeing that comes from looking one's best.
People seeking hair replacement today have both surgical and non-surgical options from which to choose.
Surgical hair replacement can be a daunting prospect for some. After all, few people submit happily to surgery because every operation carries risk. Sometimes the names of surgical replacement procedures can give a person the shivers. Hair Transplant techniques include such things as punch grafts, micro-grafts, mini-grafts, strip grafts and slit grafts. More extensive procedures are known as flaps, scalp-reduction and tissue-expansion. Some people may need more than one of these types of techniques to achieve results.
In any case, candidates for surgical for this procedure need healthy hair growing at the sides and back of their heads. That's because surgeons use the healthy hair in these areas as donor sites for grafts and flaps. Even with all this effort, there's a limit to how much hair can be re-grown. Someone who has extensive hair loss probably would be advised not to try replacement surgery.
On the other hand, finding suitable non-surgical hair replacement can be frustrating as well. It's important to have all the facts about each option before making a purchase. Regardless of what it may be called, all hairpieces are the same, made by similar processes from common materials produced by a few manufacturers.
Today, hairpieces, toupees, wigs – whatever they're called – are made from either meshes or polymers or a combination. A mesh fabric of nylon or polyester creates a very natural-looking hairline and is cool and comfortable to wear, but it's more expensive and doesn't last as long as other options.
In contrast, polymer hairpieces made of polyurethane or silicone are more durable and less expensive. However, they can be uncomfortable to wear because they hold in heat (a lot of the body's heat escapes through the porous membrane of the scalp).
The hair used in hair replacement can be genuine human hair, animal hair or artificial fibers. The most expensive hairpieces are made with European human hair, since this natural hair is available in a variety of colors, curliness and texture. The least expensive hairpieces are made with Asian hair, usually dark and straight, that has been dyed, bleached or curled. Since processing tends to make Asian hair dry and brittle, hairpieces of this type will fuzz quickly as the hair breaks off. This means that the hairpiece will have to be replaced more often.
Even an expertly made hairpiece will require regular maintenance, because human hair is so fragile. No matter how expensive, a top-quality hair replacement will need to be replaced itself over time.
